Arup Façade Engineering Newsletter

August/September 2014

One of the reasons façade engineering exists as a discipline is that the building envelope is complex, and increasingly so.  Weathering systems, high performance coatings, materiality and, of course, geometry to die for.  Right from our founding moment in 1987 we have seen our role, not only as the engineer of these systems but as communicators - communicators of complexity.  This issue of our newsletter focuses on our ability to take complex ideas, rationalize them until they are buildable and affordable and then communicate how.  We show a handful of projects – the tip of the iceberg – and profile some of our best engineers and communicators.

I hope you will be impressed and inspired.  As ever if you have any thoughts or questions please get in touch – either with me or any of the team mentioned in the articles.

What really matters when selecting roofing systems ?

Arup is working with a manufacturer on a fully integrated roof/façade system capable of generating both heat and electricity. We would like to understand what criteria impact on your selection of façade and roofing products and renewable heat and energy generation. Please take our 5-minute survey to give your views. If you would like more information on the system, please leave your details at the end of the survey. Thank you for your help.
