Florey Building, University of Oxford

Arup Façade Engineering is part of the Arup multidisciplinary team appointed for the regeneration of the Florey Building at the Queen’s College, Oxford. The Arup services include enhancement of the façade performance and improved comfort and energy performance.

Given the Grade II listing of the building, our approach will seek to achieve the right balance between conservation and performance matters. Working together with Avanti Architects we will develop a strategy for the different areas of the façades by taking into careful consideration the proposed re-arrangement of the spaces, the needs of the College expressed in the brief and the original ‘spirit’ of the design.

The student residence building, which was completed in 1971, is one of the celebrated ‘Red Trilogy’ projects by James Stirling. Arup is involved in upgrade and restoration works to the other two, which are also both listed; the Engineering Building at the University of Leicester (by Stirling & Gowan), and the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge.

Curtis Green

A multidisciplinary Arup team is working with AHMM Architects on the redevelopment and extension of the Curtis Green Building on Victoria Embankment, London. When completed, it will become the new headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service.

The 1930s neoclassical building, part of the Whitehall Estate, is of special heritage interest. It features original Portland Stone, which will be restored and complemented by new stone facades, glazed pavilions and curtain walling with terracotta shading details. Both new and existing facades will be high performance to help minimise energy use in the building.

The project is being delivered against a tight schedule in order to allow the Metropolitan Police to move out of the existing New Scotland Yard headquarters.
