“Our experience in developing accurate thermal assessment of articulated façade systems was essential to prove to the Part L Approved Inspector that the envelope was achieving the recently revised requirements, avoiding any significant redesign” Giorgio Buffoni, Project Director Developed to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’, the 9-storey office building presents a unique location within the City, with the two main East and West elevations facing the green expanse of Finsbury Square and the Honourable Artillery Company Sports ground respectively. | The building was initially designed according to ‘Part L 2006’ criteria. A thorough review was required at the beginning of 2011 when Arup was appointed, to make sure the scheme was able to meet the recently introduced ‘Part L 2010’ requirements.
Arup Façade Engineering (AFE) provided a key support, developing a detailed assessment of the envelope thermal performance including the most critical thermal bridges which was essential to prove the building was aligned with the new targets, requiring no significant redesign and no additional costs for the Client. | The façade presents an articulated East facing elevation, with a variety of cladding types. The double height space at the ground floor is fully glazed, with low-iron glass fins and singly curved concave and convex double glazed units, with a solar interlayer laminated within the external pane to control the solar radiation. The typical floors feature 6m long precast concrete spandrel panels supporting a unitised curtain wall made of glazed and stainless steel metal panels, providing the level of solidity required to reduce the solar gains. The fully glazed ‘pavilion’ at the roof level offers a stunning view across the City skyline, with an externally ventilated narrow cavity double skin façade.
The building is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2014. Giorgio.Buffoni@arup.com |
