Alexis.Harrison@arup.com Alexis Harrison and Peter Webb of Arup curated the Future Thinking exhibition at the Surface Design Show in Islington, London. The exhibition, called 21st Century Fragments, examines contemporary artefacts – a unique look at fragments from today’s most innovative building facades and structures, revealing the thinking and materials technology that drive their design. Facades make up around 25% of the cost of a building, and a vast amount of creativity, engineering and technology goes into their development, pushing materials to their limits. | These artefacts draw upon Arup’s wealth of experience in materials technology and façade engineering, featuring physical elements from the design and construction of cutting edge projects by the World’s leading architects. They include experiments, samples and one-to-one mock ups, and feature the innovative use of familiar materials like ceramic, glass, metal, timber and brick, alongside newer materials such as advanced composites. | |
